Austin Airport (AUS) to Downtown Austin: Chauffeur vs Rideshare vs CapMetro

Austin-Bergstrom to downtown is about 7.5 miles (12 km). Compare CapMetro Route 20, rideshare, taxi and a pre-booked black car, with real pickup rules.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is one of the easiest big airports in the United States to leave, and one of the harder ones to leave well on a festival weekend. The distance to downtown is short, but the way you leave the terminal changes everything: a CapMetro bus stop outside baggage claim, a rideshare pickup that sits under the rental car facility rather than at the curb, a short list of taxi companies, and a prearranged car that needs a meeting point agreed in advance. This guide walks through each option with the distances, times and rules that the airport and the transit agency publish, and explains when a pre-booked chauffeur is the sensible call.

The short answer

Downtown Austin is about 7.5 miles (roughly 12 km) from the airport, which Visit Austin describes as a drive of roughly 15 minutes in good conditions. Allow 15 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic, and longer during major events. Your realistic options are:

  • CapMetro Route 20: a bus from the lower level outside baggage claim, about 35 minutes to downtown, US$1.25 a ride.
  • Rideshare (Uber or Lyft): about 23 minutes in Uber's published average for the route, with an average price Uber lists near US$35; Uber's page shows a wider range and the price moves with demand.
  • Taxi: three companies are listed on the airport's page. The page does not publish fares, so agree how the fare is calculated before you start.
  • Pre-booked black car, SUV or Sprinter: a chauffeur who tracks your flight and meets you, with the vehicle sized to your group and bags.

AUS to downtown by Uber (published average)about 9 miles of road on Uber's route pageabout 23 minutes

These figures come from published sources: Visit Austin, CapMetro and Uber's route page. Distances differ slightly between sources because they measure to different downtown points, so treat them as a guide and allow for event-day conditions.

Option 1: CapMetro Route 20 (the budget option)

CapMetro runs two routes from the airport. Route 20 (Manor Road/Riverside) starts at the airport, runs daily along Riverside Drive to downtown and the University of Texas campus, and comes every 15 to 30 minutes. A single ride costs US$1.25 with no surge pricing, and tap-to-pay with a phone or card is capped at two rides per service day, or US$2.50. CapMetro quotes about 35 minutes to downtown. The stop is on the lower level just outside baggage claim, marked by the neon guitar bus stop. After midnight, Route 483 (Night Owl Riverside) runs until 4 a.m., ending downtown on 6th Street.

This is a genuine bargain and a good fit for a light-packing solo traveller who is heading to a downtown hotel. It is a weaker fit for:

  • Heavy luggage or equipment cases: you carry everything onto the bus yourself.
  • Late-night arrivals: frequency drops after midnight.
  • Business arrivals with a meeting inside an hour: 35 minutes on the bus plus the walk from the stop is a long time to commit to.
  • Groups: four people on a bus is cheap, but you also share the time cost.

Option 2: Rideshare

The airport's page spells out how rideshare works at AUS, and it is the part that surprises first-time visitors:

  • Drop-off (departures): rideshare and taxi drop-off uses the upper level/departures curbside, and both levels are open, so you can use whichever is less congested.
  • Pick-up (arrivals): pickup is under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, just north of (behind) the Red Garage, not at the arrivals curb.
  • Getting there: a Red Garage First Floor to Rideshare Tram picks up from both entrances of the Red Garage on the first floor, which is accessible from baggage claim. A Mobility Tram Pilot runs from the Red Garage third floor to the rental car facility entrance, from 8 am to 8 pm, subject to change; you then take the elevator or stairs down to the second floor for the rideshare pickup.

So a rideshare from AUS is not a curb pickup. Budget a few extra minutes for the tram or the walk, and keep your phone charged. Uber's route page lists an average of about 23 minutes and an average price near US$35 for the trip; the price shown on the page spans a much wider band, and it will spike when a large event ends or a flight bank lands.

Option 3: Taxi

The airport page lists three taxi companies: ATX Co-Op Taxi, Central City Taxi and Z-Trip. Taxis use the same drop-off and pick-up arrangement as rideshare. A free Mobility Assistance Zone, open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., serves wheelchair-accessible vehicles, taxis and rideshares. The airport page does not state flat fares or times to downtown, so treat any quoted number as an estimate and agree how the fare will be calculated before you set off.

Option 4: A pre-booked black car, SUV or Sprinter

For travellers who value a known pickup point, a fixed arrival time and a vehicle matched to the group, a pre-booked chauffeur removes the guesswork. The airport lists many prearranged limousine and charter companies on its ground transportation page, and notes that drivers wait in a cell phone lot at 2901 Spirit of Texas Drive, open 24 hours, before they collect arriving passengers. The page does not specify a single curbside pickup point for prearranged services, which is exactly why it matters to confirm the meeting point in writing when you book.

With Onroutz, you book in advance, give your airline and flight number, and dispatch tracks the flight so the pickup moves if the plane is early or late. You tell us how many passengers and how many bags, so we match the vehicle: a sedan for one or two travellers, an SUV for families and executives with bags, and a Sprinter for larger groups and teams.

This option makes the most sense when:

  • You are carrying equipment: audio, camera or booth cases do not belong on a bus.
  • You land late: a confirmed vehicle at 11 pm is worth more than a promise that a car will appear.
  • You are a group of three or more: one vehicle is simpler and often costs less than several rideshare cars.
  • You have a timed commitment: a meeting, a panel, a dinner or a show.
  • You want one point of contact if anything changes.

Onroutz shows a price range rather than one fixed number until the pickup details are confirmed, and you book directly through our own booking page. Enter your flight, the passenger count and the bags and you see the range before you commit.

Your arrival at AUS, step by step

A little preparation removes most of the friction at Austin-Bergstrom. This is the sequence for each way of leaving the terminal.

  1. Before you land. Decide which option you are using and, if it is a pre-booked car, check that you have the driver's name, the vehicle description and a phone number. Save the airport's ground transportation page in your phone's browser; it carries the tram times and the pickup map.
  2. At baggage claim. If you are taking the bus, the stop is on the lower level just outside baggage claim, marked by the neon guitar bus stop. If you are taking a rideshare, the airport directs you to the Red Garage first floor to board the rideshare tram, which is reachable from baggage claim.
  3. If you have a chauffeur. Our dispatch team tracks your flight and confirms the meeting point. Message the driver when you have your bags, so the vehicle is ready as you reach it.
  4. If you need mobility assistance. The airport operates a free Mobility Assistance Zone, open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., for wheelchair-accessible vehicles, taxis and rideshares. If you need step-free access, a wheelchair or a walker carried, tell us when you book so we can confirm in writing what we can arrange.
  5. If the flight is late. A chauffeur company that tracks flights will move the pickup. For rideshare and taxi, nothing changes: you request the car when you are ready.

Going back to the airport from downtown

Departures use the upper level/departures curbside for rideshare and taxi drop-off, and the airport states that both levels are open so you can use whichever is less congested. For a morning departure from a downtown hotel, build in time for road conditions and for the security queue; check live conditions on DriveTexas before you leave. A pre-booked pickup is particularly useful for early flights, when a car that is confirmed for 4:30 a.m. beats hoping a rideshare is available.

Sizing the vehicle to your party

Choosing the right vehicle is the cheapest way to avoid a bad arrival.

  • One or two travellers with standard luggage: an executive sedan is enough.
  • Three to five travellers with luggage, or business travellers carrying equipment: a luxury SUV gives you room for bags and passengers.
  • Six or more, or a crew with cases: a Sprinter van, which seats larger groups and carries more luggage.
  • Anything oversized: instruments, camera cases, display boards. Mention them when you book, so the vehicle is chosen with the cargo in mind.

What to ask any car service in Austin

Whether you book with us or another company, five questions protect you:

  1. Is the price confirmed before I travel, and does it include fees and gratuity?
  2. Where exactly will the driver meet me, given the airport's arrangements?
  3. Do you track my flight, and how much waiting time is included?
  4. Is the vehicle matched to my group and bags?
  5. What is the cancellation policy?

Event weekends: plan differently

Austin's calendar changes the airport experience. SXSW (sxsw.com) and the Formula 1 weekend at the Circuit of the Americas (circuitoftheamericas.com) fill hotels, close streets and push rideshare prices up. On those weekends:

  1. Book your transfer before you fly. Do not rely on finding a car at the pickup zone.
  2. Confirm the meeting point in writing and keep the driver's phone number.
  3. Add buffer time to every leg, including the trip between downtown and the venues.
  4. Check live road conditions at DriveTexas (drivetexas.org) before leaving.
  5. Know the cancellation terms (below).

Yes. CapMetro Route 20 runs from the lower level outside baggage claim to downtown and the UT campus, about every 15 to 30 minutes, for US$1.25 a ride. Route 483 runs after midnight until 4 a.m.

Where do I get an Uber or Lyft at AUS?

Under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, just north of the Red Garage. Trams run from the Red Garage first floor, and a mobility tram pilot runs from the third floor from 8 am to 8 pm.

Where will my chauffeur meet me?

The airport does not publish a single curbside point for prearranged vehicles, so we confirm the meeting point with you in writing when you book, and the driver waits in the cell phone lot until you are ready.

Can you take me beyond downtown, such as San Antonio or Houston?

Yes, our city-to-city service covers longer routes. Ask for a quote with your pickup and drop-off addresses.
