MIA to PortMiami Cruise Transfer Guide: Black Car vs Uber vs Shuttle

Miami airport to PortMiami is about 9 miles (14.5 km). Compare taxi, rideshare, cruise-line shuttle, trolley and a private black car before boarding day.

Landing at Miami International Airport (MIA) on the day your ship sails is one of the most common travel plans in Florida, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The distance is short, but the timing is not forgiving: baggage claim at MIA, a pickup zone full of other cruise passengers, a drive across the city on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and a terminal at PortMiami that has its own drop-off rules. This guide compares every realistic way to cover the distance, with real distances, times and published fares, so you can pick the option that fits your group, your luggage and your boarding window.

The short answer

PortMiami is about 9 miles (roughly 14.5 km) from Miami International Airport, according to the airport's own ground transportation page. Published estimates put the drive at roughly 15 to 30 minutes in normal traffic, and longer on cruise-ship mornings when several ships are loading at once. The options are:

  • Taxi or ride-app: ground level, outside baggage claim. Uber's own route page estimates about 24 minutes and about US$28 for a standard ride over roughly 10 miles; real fares move with demand and with the number of ships in port.
  • Cruise-line shuttle: the cheapest door-to-door option per person on lines that sell it, but tied to fixed departure windows and flight arrival cut-offs.
  • Shared airport shuttle: a fixed morning window and a per-person price, usually lower than a private car for one or two travellers.
  • Public transit plus the City of Miami Trolley: the lowest cost, the longest time, and the hardest with luggage.
  • Private black car, SUV or Sprinter: a pre-booked chauffeur who tracks your flight, meets you at arrivals and drives you to the terminal for your ship. This is the option that tends to win for groups of three or more, for large luggage, and for anyone with a tight connection.

Everything below explains how each one actually works, and where the pitfalls are.

Distance and time: what to plan around

The airport lists PortMiami as about 9 miles away. Think in terms of 14.5 km and a drive of roughly 15 to 30 minutes when the roads are clear. That is the drive only. A realistic door-to-door plan for a flight landing the morning your ship sails has to add:

  1. Deplaning and baggage claim: 30 to 60 minutes for most domestic and international arrivals once you count the walk, the immigration and customs queue on an international flight, and the wait for checked bags.
  2. Getting to the vehicle: a few minutes to find the right pickup zone or meeting point.
  3. The drive: 15 to 30 minutes, with extra margin on Friday to Sunday sailings.
  4. Terminal drop-off and check-in: the port's lines at check-in vary by ship and by time. Arrivals in the late morning are generally busier than early ones.

Most cruise lines recommend flying in the day before your sailing, and for good reason: a delayed flight on boarding day can mean missing the ship, and travel insurance rarely covers a self-inflicted tight connection. If you must fly in the same day, book the earliest arrival you can and keep the afternoon buffer your cruise line recommends.

Option 1: Taxi or ride-app

Taxi and ride-app pickup at MIA is on the arrival (ground) level, outside the baggage claim areas, as the airport states. This is the simplest option for one or two travellers with light luggage. It also has the widest range of outcomes:

  • Cost: metered or app-priced. Uber's route page for MIA to PortMiami shows a typical trip of about 24 minutes at about US$28. That is a typical figure, not a guarantee, and the price can rise sharply when demand spikes on busy cruise mornings.
  • Waiting: a short wait when the airport is quiet, a longer one on a Saturday or Sunday when a flight bank lands together with ship passengers.
  • Luggage: a standard sedan fits two large suitcases comfortably. Four people with cruise-size luggage will not fit in a standard car, and a larger vehicle can cost more and take longer to arrive.
  • Rules at the port: drivers can usually drop you at the terminal's passenger drop-off, but the exact approach depends on your ship and the port's traffic plan on the day.

If you pick this option, confirm the pickup zone before you land, screenshot your ride confirmation in case your phone loses signal in the terminal, and budget extra time on weekends.

Option 2: The cruise-line shuttle

Several cruise lines sell an airport-to-ship transfer. Carnival's published Miami transfer page is a clear example of how these work: the service starts at 10:30 AM, runs hourly shuttles to the port until 1:00 PM, and requires your flight to arrive no later than 12:00 PM on the day of embarkation. Carnival lists the fare at roughly US$22.99 per person for this transfer on its excursion listing.

That structure is typical:

  • Strengths: lowest per-person cost among the door-to-door options, a single payment inside your cruise booking, and a guaranteed path to the ship if a flight delay is the cruise line's problem to solve.
  • Weaknesses: fixed departure windows, a wait until the next shuttle fills, and a cut-off time that rules out later flights. The airport lists cruise-line transport from its North bus station (Concourse D, Level 1, Door 1) and its South bus station (Concourse J, Level 1, Door 33), so you also need to know which door your line uses.
  • Not for everyone: if you are a family of four or more, a small pre-booked private vehicle can cost about the same as four shuttle seats, with no window to meet. Always compare after you add up the per-person fares.

Check your own cruise line's transfer page for its current rules. They vary by line and by ship, and they change.

Option 3: A shared airport shuttle

Third-party shared shuttles also serve the airport and the port. One operator lists a shared shuttle departing Miami Airport between 10 am and 1 pm at a per-person price in the low double digits one way. Another lists a private one-way transfer for one to three guests from the mid-US$40s. Prices like these are published starting points: they depend on the number of passengers, the vehicle and the time window, and they can change.

Shared shuttles suit solo travellers and couples on a budget who land inside the shuttle window. They are weaker if your flight is delayed, if you have a lot of luggage, or if you want to leave on your own timetable.

Option 4: Public transit plus the City of Miami Trolley

This is the lowest-cost option and the hardest one with luggage. The airport's page describes it: ride the MIA Mover from the 3rd level, between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages, to the Miami Intermodal Center and Rental Car Center, then board the City of Miami Trolley. The airport names three trolley routes that reach PortMiami: Flagami, Little Havana and Coral Way.

It is workable for a light-packing solo traveller who is not in a hurry. It is not a practical plan for a family with cruise suitcases, strollers or mobility needs, and it adds transfers that can break down if a flight is late or a connection is missed. Treat it as a budget fallback, not a default.

Option 5: A private black car, SUV or Sprinter

A pre-booked chauffeured vehicle is the option built for the problems above. With Onroutz, you book in advance, give us your flight number, and the dispatch team tracks the flight. The chauffeur meets you at arrivals rather than making you hunt for a zone, helps with luggage, and drives you directly to your terminal.

Why this tends to win for specific travellers:

  • Groups of three or more: a single SUV or Sprinter is one booking, one price and one pickup, instead of several rideshare cars or a string of shuttle seats.
  • Heavy luggage: cruise luggage is large. Matching the vehicle to the bags is the main reason many families upgrade from a sedan to an SUV or van.
  • Tight timetables: a vehicle that waits for your flight does not depend on a shuttle window or a surge price.
  • Mixed routes: if you are arriving at Miami but your cruise leaves from Port Everglades, or you are being collected from a hotel in Brickell or Miami Beach, the same booking covers any pickup address.

Independent private-car operators in Miami publish flat rates that run from roughly the mid-US$80s for a sedan to about US$155 for larger vehicles for this exact route (checked October 2026). Onroutz shows a price range rather than a single number, because tolls, the vehicle and the time of day all change the final amount. Use the instant quote on our booking page: enter the flight, the number of passengers and the number of bags, and you see the range before you commit. You book directly with us, with no marketplace in between.

Planning checklist for boarding day

  1. Check your cruise line's own transfer rules first. The airport and the line decide where cruise buses pick up and which flights qualify.
  2. Fly in the day before if you can. It removes the risk entirely.
  3. Decide on luggage. Count the bags, not the people. A family of four with eight bags needs more than one sedan.
  4. Book transport before you fly. Rideshare cars cannot be reserved the way a chauffeur can; a booked chauffeur is waiting when you land.
  5. Give your flight number. We track delays so the pickup time moves with the plane.
  6. Know your terminal. PortMiami has several cruise terminals, and your boarding documents name the one for your ship.
  7. Allow for weekend traffic. Friday to Sunday mornings add time; Florida 511 (fl511.com) shows live conditions.

Cancellation policy

Plans change, especially around weather and cruise schedules. Measured from your scheduled pickup time, cancellations more than 72 hours ahead are free; at 72 hours or less the charge is 10%; at 48 hours or less it is 50%; at 24 hours or less, or a no-show, it is 100%. Peak holidays and large events can carry a different deadline, which is stated on your confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Port of Miami from Miami airport?

About 9 miles (roughly 14.5 km), according to the airport's ground transportation page. Plan on a 15 to 30 minute drive in normal conditions, with extra time on weekend cruise mornings.

Is there a free shuttle from MIA to the cruise port?

Not as a general service. Cruise lines sell their own airport transfers, and some airport hotels offer cruise-port shuttles to guests; both have rules about timing and bookings. The City of Miami Trolley is low cost but requires the MIA Mover and a transfer.

Can a private car take me to any terminal at PortMiami?

Yes. Your boarding document names the terminal, and the chauffeur drives to the passenger drop-off for that terminal. Give the ship name and sailing time when you book.

What if my flight is late?

We track your flight number and adjust the pickup. Tell us the cruise departure time as well, so we can advise you if the timing is at risk.

Do you serve Fort Lauderdale and Port Everglades too?

We have a Fort Lauderdale airport guide (see the related reading below). If your ship sails from Port Everglades instead of PortMiami, tell us when you request your quote so we can confirm the route and timing.
