The bridges decide Eastside journeys
Getting to Bellevue, Redmond or Kirkland means crossing Lake Washington on either I-90 or SR-520, both floating bridges. When one has an incident, the other absorbs its traffic and both stop. Eastside journeys deserve more buffer than the distance suggests.
Rain is not the problem
Seattle’s reputation for rain overstates its effect on driving — it is persistent rather than heavy. The genuine weather disruption here is the occasional snow event, which the city is not equipped for and which closes hills across the metro almost immediately.
