The Kennedy Expressway

O’Hare connects to the city via I-190 onto the Kennedy Expressway. It is a direct route with a reversible express lane in the middle that runs inbound in the morning and outbound in the evening — and access to it is the difference between a 30-minute run and a 60-minute one.

• The Loop and River North — 30 minutes clear, an hour or more at peak.
• Rosemont and the airport corporate cluster — under 10 minutes.
• Schaumburg and the northwest suburbs — 25 to 40 minutes.
• Milwaukee — around 90 minutes north, a common alternative when weather closes the field.

Winter is the defining variable

Chicago winters do not merely delay flights, they reshape the whole day. A significant snow event produces cancellations that cascade for 48 hours, and the ground transport consequence is a surge of passengers who suddenly need to drive somewhere — to Milwaukee, to Indianapolis, or simply to a hotel.

Chicago Executive as the alternative

Chicago Executive Airport at Wheeling, about 25 miles northwest of the Loop, is the region’s principal reliever field for business aviation. For a passenger headed to the northern suburbs or the North Shore it is comfortably the better arrival point, and the ground transport is faster in every direction except downtown.
