Private aviation at Vancouver operates out of the South Terminal, a genuinely separate part of the field from the main international terminal that most passengers never see. Signature Flight Support and London Air Services are the principal operators there, and the practical advantage for a passenger is considerable: you are off the aircraft and into a car in the time it takes a commercial arrival to reach the baggage hall.
Vancouver is the easy one
Of the major Canadian airports, YVR has the least painful ground access. The airport sits on Sea Island in Richmond, and Grant McConachie Way feeds directly onto the Arthur Laing Bridge into Vancouver proper. Downtown is around 25 minutes in ordinary conditions and rarely much worse.

- Richmond — 10 minutes, and the closest hotel cluster to the field.
- Whistler — about two hours up the Sea to Sky Highway, and one of the most requested onward journeys from this airport.

The Whistler run
More private aviation passengers arrive at YVR bound for Whistler than for Vancouver itself in the winter months. The Sea to Sky is a spectacular road and an unforgiving one — two lanes for much of its length, weather-dependent, and with no realistic alternative if it closes. We allow substantially more buffer on this route than the map suggests, and we use chauffeurs who drive it regularly rather than whoever is free.
For groups arriving together, this is also a journey where vehicle choice matters. Ski equipment and a party of four do not fit in a sedan.
Cruise season changes everything
Between May and September, Vancouver is a turnaround port for Alaska sailings. On a Wednesday in July, Canada Place processes several thousand embarking passengers, and the roads around the terminal reflect it. Private aviation arrivals connecting to a ship should be planned around the sailing schedule rather than the flight schedule — the constraint is the pier, not the airport.
