How Much Does a Limo or Black Car Cost? Toronto, Miami, Austin

What a limo or black car really costs: hourly vs flat-rate pricing, HST, gratuity, airport fees, wait time and the add-ons to ask about before you book.

"How much does a limo cost?" is one of the most searched questions in the chauffeur industry, and the honest answer is: it depends on five or six things that most price lists hide. A quote of "from $60" and a quote of "$250 an hour" can both be true for the same city. This guide explains how limo and black car pricing is built, what is usually included and what is usually added, how Toronto, Miami and Austin trips are priced in practice, and how to compare two quotes fairly. It does not publish a single price, because a single price for a service that changes with the vehicle, the hour, the route and the day would mislead you. It shows you how to read a quote instead.

The short answer

Published rates for limousine and black car service vary widely across the United States and Canada. Operator guides that list hourly ranges for single cities show spreads such as an executive sedan in the range of roughly US$95 to US$125 an hour in one midwestern city (published March 2026), and a general span of about US$60 to US$250 an hour for sedans, stretch limousines and party buses in a Texas market. A Colorado operator lists limo rentals from US$75 to US$150 an hour and weddings in the US$600 to US$1,200 range (published October 2025). Those numbers are from other cities and other operators, and they prove one point: the vehicle, the market and the booking type move the price more than any other factor.

For a trip you actually want to take, the useful numbers are your own: a price range for your vehicle, your pickup time and your route. On the Onroutz booking page you enter the trip and see a range before you commit.

The four ways a chauffeur trip is priced

  1. Point-to-point (a flat rate): a fixed price for a defined route, such as an airport to a hotel. It usually includes a short waiting period at the airport and the base mileage for that route. Best for one-way airport transfers.
  2. Hourly, "as directed": you pay by the hour for a vehicle and driver who stay with you for the day, with a minimum number of hours. Best for meetings, shows, weddings, tours and multi-stop days. The meter starts at the scheduled pickup time, not when you get in the car.
  3. Daily or multi-day: a day rate with a set number of hours and kilometres, for roadshows, film crews and conventions. Often negotiated.
  4. Event packages: a set period and route for weddings, proms, red-carpet events or festivals, sometimes with a decoration or champagne add-on.

What drives the price up or down

Vehicle class

Executive sedan, luxury SUV, Sprinter van, stretch limousine and party bus sit in different price bands. Match the vehicle to the group and the bags: one large cruise suitcase per traveller is a common trap that turns a sedan booking into an SUV booking.

Time and day

Friday and Saturday nights, holiday weekends, prom season, major conventions and festival weeks cost more and sell out early. A booking at 5 a.m. may carry an early or late surcharge; some operators price the night differently from the day.

Distance and time (the part that is easy to forget)

Distance is not just a number; it is time in traffic. For example, the airport lists Port of Miami at about 9 miles (roughly 14.5 km) from Miami International Airport, and Visit Austin lists downtown Austin at about 7.5 miles (12 km) from the airport. Our own route data puts Toronto Pearson to downtown Toronto at about 27 km (17 miles) and 30 to 60 minutes by road. The same distance can take half as long at 6 a.m. as at 5 p.m., so any honest quote for a long ride states the time as well as the distance.

Waiting time

Airport pickups normally include a set free waiting period after the scheduled landing time. After that, waiting is charged in increments. If your flight is delayed, a chauffeur who tracks the flight number resets the pickup instead of billing you for the gap.

Airport, parking and toll fees

Airports charge commercial vehicles for access, and tolls and parking are passed through on many bookings. Ask whether the quote includes them. A low base rate with every fee added at the end is the commonest reason two quotes cannot be compared.

Gratuity

Some operators add a standard gratuity or service charge of 15% to 20% to the bill; others leave it to you. Whichever applies, it should be clear before you pay. If it is already included, you do not need to tip again. Our companion guide on tipping covers the details.

Taxes

In Ontario, the HST rate is 13%, as the Canada Revenue Agency's guidance on which rate to charge shows for a sale where the place of supply is Ontario. In the United States, taxes and fees on passenger transportation vary by state, county and city. The only safe question is: "Is this price before or after tax?"

Extras

Child seats, extra stops, meet-and-greet inside the terminal, decorations, bottled water, Wi-Fi, a second driver for long days and out-of-area pickups are common add-ons. List yours when you ask for a quote.

Cancellation terms

A lower price with a harsh cancellation policy is not always cheaper. Our own policy, measured from your scheduled pickup time, is free cancellation more than 72 hours ahead, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.

An illustration of how a quote adds up (not a price)

This example uses a made-up hourly rate to show the arithmetic. It is not an Onroutz price.

Suppose an operator charges US$100 an hour with a four-hour minimum. The base is US$400. If tax at 13% applies, that adds US$52, for US$452. If a 15% to 20% gratuity is added on the US$400 base, that adds US$60 to US$80, for a total of about US$512 to US$532. If the same trip includes US$20 of tolls and a US$15 airport fee, the total moves again. Ask any operator for the "all-in" figure at the same assumptions, then compare.

How the three cities differ in practice

Toronto

Toronto trips split between airport work (Pearson and Billy Bishop), hourly business and event bookings, and longer city-to-city runs such as Toronto to Niagara Falls. Winter weather and event weeks such as TIFF change availability. Ontario's 13% HST applies to the fare. Our route pages on the Canadian site list distance and typical drive times for the most common trips.

Miami

Miami has two big drivers: cruise-day transfers (airport to PortMiami, at about 9 miles) and event weeks such as Art Basel and the Miami Grand Prix, when demand rises sharply. A flat rate for a defined airport-to-port trip is common. Our Miami cruise-transfer guide compares every option.

Austin

Austin pricing is driven by event weekends. SXSW and the Formula 1 weekend at the Circuit of the Americas fill vehicles months ahead. A single airport-to-downtown run is short (about 7.5 miles), so the premium on those weekends comes from demand rather than distance.

Three example trips and what shapes their price

TripDistance and timeWhat shapes the price
Toronto Pearson to downtown Torontoabout 27 km (17 miles), 30 to 60 minutes by roadRush-hour traffic, vehicle class, airport fee, HST
Miami airport to PortMiamiabout 9 miles (14.5 km), roughly 15 to 30 minutesWeekend cruise mornings, luggage, group size
Austin airport to downtown Austinabout 7.5 miles (12 km), roughly 15 to 30 minutesEvent weekends, late-night arrival, vehicle class

Short distances do not mean small differences in price: a short trip in a Sprinter on a festival night can cost more than a longer trip in a sedan on a quiet morning.

When prices rise: a seasonal calendar

Demand, not distance, explains most of the swings. These are the periods when chauffeur availability tightens in the three cities. Dates change each year, so check the official event sites.

  • Toronto: the Toronto International Film Festival in September, prom season in late spring, the holiday-party season in December and any week with a large convention at the downtown convention centre.
  • Miami: Art Basel Miami Beach in early December, the Miami Grand Prix weekend in spring, the winter cruise season, and spring-break weekends.
  • Austin: SXSW in March, the Formula 1 weekend at the Circuit of the Americas in the autumn, and large festival weekends.

If your dates overlap one of these, book early. A chauffeur booked three months out for a festival week is typically available; the same booking made three days out may not be.

Seven ways to pay a fair price

  1. Book early, especially for peak dates.
  2. Match the vehicle to the group. Do not book a stretch limousine for two travellers or a sedan for six with luggage.
  3. Choose the right booking type. A one-way airport transfer is a trip rate; three stops across a day is cheaper by the hour than three separate trips.
  4. Give a flight number, so waiting time is managed and you are not billed for delays outside your control.
  5. Ask for the all-in figure, including tolls, fees, tax and gratuity.
  6. Confirm the pickup address and time precisely. Wrong addresses cause extra distance and wasted waiting.
  7. Read the cancellation terms before you pay.

Corporate accounts and repeat travel

Companies that travel often usually prefer a single arrangement over a booking each time. Ask any operator whether they offer an account with a named contact, consolidated billing and a clear cancellation policy. Our corporate service page explains how we work with business travellers, and our dispatch team can talk through the details for your office.

Five questions that make quotes comparable

  1. Is the price all-in, including tolls, airport fees and gratuity? If not, which are extra?
  2. Is the price before or after tax?
  3. How many minutes of free waiting are included at the airport?
  4. What is the minimum number of hours, and when does the clock start and stop?
  5. What is the cancellation policy, and can it be read before I pay?

Why we show ranges, not one number

A single figure suggests a certainty the trip does not yet have. Tolls, the exact pickup address, the vehicle and the hour all change the final amount. Showing a range keeps the expectation honest, and you still see the cost before you pay. You book directly with us on our own booking page, so there is no marketplace commission between you and the chauffeur.

Frequently asked questions

Is a black car cheaper than a limo?

Often, for small groups. A black sedan or SUV usually costs less than a stretch limousine for the same hours. A limousine or party bus can be better value per person for large groups or celebrations.

Do you charge by the hour or by the trip?

Both. Airport transfers and defined city routes are usually priced as a trip; meetings, tours and multi-stop days are priced by the hour with a minimum.

Does the price include the tip?

That depends on the operator. Check the quote. If a gratuity is included, you do not need to add another.

Why do prices go up on weekends and holidays?

Because demand rises and vehicles run out. Booking early locks in availability.

Can I get a firm price before I book?

You get a price range on the booking page for your trip details. The final amount is confirmed on your booking confirmation.
