Getting To and From Toronto Pearson Airport

Toronto Pearson is the busiest airport in Canada, and there are more ways in and out of it than most travellers realise. Which one is right depends far less on cost than on what you are carrying, what time you are travelling, and how much of the journey you want to think about.

This is a straight comparison of the realistic options, including the ones that are not us.

Your options from Toronto Pearson

UP Express

UP Express runs from Terminal 1 to Union Station downtown in roughly 25 minutes, with departures about every 15 minutes and a stop at Bloor and Weston. It is fast, it is predictable, and it is unaffected by traffic on the 401. If you are travelling light and your destination is near Union or a subway line, it is genuinely hard to beat.

The catch is the ends of the journey. It departs from Terminal 1 only — Terminal 3 passengers take the LINK train first — and at the other end you still need to get from Union to wherever you are actually going, with your luggage, possibly in February.

TTC and GO Transit

The TTC 900 Airport Rocket connects Pearson to Kipling Station on Line 2, and several bus routes serve the airport around the clock. GO Transit route 34 links Pearson to Richmond Hill and the wider regional network. Both are the cheapest way in and out by a wide margin, and both are a poor fit for heavy luggage, tight connections or late arrivals.

Airport taxis and licensed limousines

Pearson licenses taxi and limousine operators to work its curbside ranks. You do not need to book, which is the main advantage — you join a queue and take the next vehicle. The trade-off is that you have no control over what arrives, queues at peak arrival banks can be long, and you are dealing with the logistics after a flight rather than before it.

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft operate from designated pickup zones rather than the main arrivals curb, so there is a walk involved. Pricing moves with demand, which means the moment when the most people want a car — a bank of delayed evening arrivals — is also the moment it costs the most. You also cannot reliably request a child seat, and no rideshare product will meet you inside the terminal.

Pre-booked chauffeur service

A pre-arranged transfer inverts the model: the vehicle, the driver, the pickup point and the price are all agreed before you fly. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, so a delay is absorbed rather than becoming your problem. It is the most expensive option per journey and the least demanding of your attention, which is exactly the trade most business travellers and families want to make.

Driving and parking

Pearson offers daily, value and garage parking across both terminals. For a short trip this can work out sensibly. For anything over a few days, parking charges accumulate quickly, and you are still driving the 401 at both ends of a long-haul flight.

This is the part that confuses people, so it is worth being precise about the mechanics rather than the numbers.

• Licensed airport taxis and limousines operating from the Pearson ranks work to a published zone structure rather than a pure meter, so the fare depends on which zone your destination falls into.
• Rideshare is dynamically priced, so the same trip can vary substantially depending on demand at that moment.
• Pre-booked chauffeur service is quoted per journey at the time you reserve, and that quote is what you pay — it does not move because your flight landed late or because it started raining.

Terminal basics worth knowing

Pearson has two passenger terminals. Terminal 1 handles Air Canada and Star Alliance carriers plus much of the international traffic; Terminal 3 handles Air Transat, WestJet, Sunwing and a mix of others. The free LINK train connects them along with the value parking lots, and runs continuously.

Check your terminal on your boarding pass before you set out. Arriving at the wrong one is recoverable but costs you twenty minutes and a train ride you had not planned for.
